Where it came from
Released in 1977, the 1500-1 Oval Bricks set represents an early, experimental phase in the expansion of the Lego Duplo line. Designed to introduce rounded geometric forms to the toddler-focused building system, these pieces were crafted to provide younger builders with greater structural flexibility beyond the traditional square brick. The design prioritized safety and ease of handling, featuring the signature larger scale that made the system distinct from standard Lego bricks.
The set was conceived during a period when the Lego Group was actively broadening the Duplo range to include specialized shapes and functional elements. By providing these unique oval components, the designers sought to encourage more fluid and organic construction techniques for children. While these elements have since been integrated into various creative sets, the 1500-1 remains a notable reference point for those studying the evolution of toddler-oriented construction toys and the company's early efforts to introduce curvature into their proprietary building medium.
