Where it came from
The Penguin (PENGUIN-1) originated as a specialized studio promotional piece, commissioned to serve as a tactile mascot for the creative agency that shares its namesake. Conceived in the late twentieth century, the design was intended to distill the silhouette of the flightless bird into a minimalist, geometric form that prioritized ergonomics and recognizable, stark contrast. The object was crafted to reflect the agency’s commitment to functionalism, stripping away superfluous detail in favor of a sleek, matte aesthetic that defined their early branding efforts.
The design was executed by a collaborative team of in-house industrial designers who drew inspiration from mid-century Scandinavian functionalism. By utilizing a weighted base and a rounded, simplified profile, they aimed to create an object that felt substantial yet approachable on a professional desk. While the piece was never intended for wide commercial release, it gained a quiet reputation among design enthusiasts for its deliberate simplicity and its role as a tangible artifact of the agency’s identity during its formative years.
