Where it came from
Released as part of the LEGO Super Mario theme in 2023, Picnic at Mario's House (set 71422) was designed to expand the interactive play environment of the series. The set serves as a modular addition, allowing users to incorporate a domestic scene into their physical Super Mario course layouts. It features iconic elements such as a yellow house, a picnic table, and accessories like a basket, bread, and beverage to evoke the charming aesthetic of the Mushroom Kingdom.
The set was developed by the LEGO Group in collaboration with Nintendo to bridge the gap between traditional building sets and the digital, sensor-based play patterns established by the Mario starter courses. By including a Yellow Yoshi figure and a Goomba, the design team aimed to provide players with specific characters to inhabit the space. It received a standard reception from the collector community, noted primarily for its role-play potential and its ability to add narrative depth to existing Super Mario play sets.
