Where it came from
Released in 2018 as part of the LEGO Ninjago Movie subtheme, the Piranha Attack set, numbered 70629-1, draws its aesthetic from the film's unique take on the long-running Ninjago franchise. Designed to replicate the stylized, aquatic-themed vehicles piloted by Garmadon's Shark Army, the set captures the whimsical yet militaristic tone of the movie's antagonist forces. It serves as a smaller, accessible entry point into the line, focusing on the character-driven playability that defined this particular movie-tie-in series.
The design of the Piranha vehicle emphasizes the movie's emphasis on oversized, creature-based machinery, utilizing curved pieces to mimic the organic silhouette of a fish while integrating stud shooters for action-oriented play. Upon its release, it was noted by the building community for its efficient use of parts and the inclusion of exclusive minifigures like Kai and Ray, which helped bridge the gap between the film's high-concept animation and the physical constraints of the brick-based medium.
