Where it came from
The Pirate's Cannon, set 1871-1, was released in 1989 as a standalone promotional item. It emerged during a period when the brand was expanding its reach through small, accessible polybag sets intended to complement larger themes, specifically the nascent pirate series that had captured the public imagination that same year.
The design is characterized by its simplicity, featuring a functional spring-loaded firing mechanism mounted on a small wheeled carriage. While not attributed to a single lead designer by name, the set reflects the era's focus on kinetic play features, aiming to provide an affordable entry point for children to add artillery to their burgeoning brick-built harbors and ships.
