Where it came from
Released in 1974, the LEGO Play Book 2522-1 served as a specialized instructional resource designed to guide builders through various creative possibilities beyond the standard set manuals of the era. Produced during a time when LEGO was actively expanding its educational and inspirational materials, this publication was intended to foster open-ended play and help children understand fundamental construction techniques using their existing brick collections.
The design of the book reflected the minimalist and functional aesthetic of mid-1970s toy marketing, featuring clear, step-by-step illustrations that relied on visual communication rather than complex text. It was well-received by parents and educators for its emphasis on creativity, eventually becoming a representative artifact of the company’s shift toward encouraging imaginative building rather than purely following predetermined set instructions.
