Released in 2011 as part of the Lego City Police subtheme, the Police Dog Unit set 7285-1 reflects the core design philosophy of the long-running City line. The set was created to provide a specialized, small-scale utility vehicle that expanded the play possibilities of a suburban-themed police force, focusing on the inclusion of the then-novel German Shepherd molded figure. Its design leans into the functional, blocky aesthetic characteristic of the era, prioritizing durability and immediate playability for younger builders.

The set was conceptualized by the internal Lego City design team, who sought to capture the specific dynamic of law enforcement K-9 units in a compact package. By pairing a simple, rugged patrol vehicle with a dedicated canine handler and dog, the design team aimed to integrate specialized emergency services into the broader Lego cityscapes being developed at the time. Upon release, it was well-received by fans of the City line for its affordability and the introduction of the canine figure, which quickly became a staple in diverse Lego scenes.
