Where it came from
The R2-D2 Key Light (part of set 5002912-1) was released by LEGO under license from Lucasfilm as a functional accessory for the Star Wars product line. Designed to resemble a standard LEGO minifigure, this oversized version incorporates an LED light built into the base, activated by a button on the chest. It was developed to serve as both a practical household tool and a novelty collectible, appealing to fans of the franchise who enjoy the marriage of LEGO's iconic aesthetic with utilitarian utility.
The design draws directly from the classic R2-D2 minifigure, capturing the droid's distinct dome and paneling in a larger, articulated format suitable for a keyring. While not part of a formal construction set, these key lights became a staple in LEGO retail displays throughout the 2010s, often positioned near registers as affordable merchandise. The product was well-received by collectors for its durability and the reliable brightness of the integrated LEDs, maintaining a consistent presence in the broader LEGO Star Wars peripheral market.
