Where it came from
Released in January 2021 as part of the LEGO Technic line, the 42117 Race Plane was designed as an entry-level set intended to introduce younger builders to the mechanical principles of the Technic system. It features a realistic design inspired by aerobatic stunt aircraft, utilizing a gear-driven propeller mechanism that rotates as the plane is pushed along a surface, mirroring the movement of actual light aircraft.
The model was created by LEGO designers to offer a dual building experience, featuring a 2-in-1 design that allows the parts to be reconfigured from a race plane into a jet aircraft. Within the Technic community, the set was noted for its efficient use of standard pin and beam elements to achieve a sturdy, compact frame, receiving favorable reviews for its educational value and accessibility for beginners.
