Where it came from
Ray the Castaway (set 40566-1) was released by LEGO in 2022 as a promotional gift-with-purchase. The set originated from a design competition hosted on the LEGO Ideas platform, where fan creator Dadi Twins submitted their concept titled 'The Adventures of the USS Cardboard.' The design was selected by the panel to be transformed into an official set, marking a successful bridge between fan-submitted ideas and commercial production.
The model features a detailed shipwrecked scene depicting a castaway living on a small, sandy island with various micro-builds including a raft, a crab, and a parrot. The design leans into a narrative-driven aesthetic, emphasizing the playful, resourceful nature of the character. Upon its release, it was well-received by the community for its dense detail and storytelling charm, often cited as a standout example of the promotional items produced within the LEGO Ideas theme.
