Where it came from
The 2303-1 Building Plates set was released in 1980 as part of the Lego Duplo line, a system introduced in 1969 to offer larger bricks designed for toddlers. These oversized plates were developed to serve as a foundational surface for small hands, allowing young builders to stabilize their creations while transitioning from basic stacking to more complex structure building. The set consists of two primary plastic boards in the characteristic Duplo red and green colors, establishing a sturdy base for the modular play that defined the theme.
The design of these plates reflects the utilitarian and minimalist approach Lego took in its early educational product cycles. By providing a flat, grid-compatible surface, the designers aimed to encourage spatial reasoning and motor skill development in children aged one and a half to five years old. While the set was a standard accessory rather than a high-concept build, it was well-received by parents and educators for its durability and its seamless compatibility with the expanding range of Duplo bricks and figures throughout the 1980s.
