Where it came from
Released in 1991 as part of the short-lived LEGO Blacktron II theme, the Renegade was designed to expand the narrative of the faction's space-faring reconnaissance and combat missions. Following the success of the original monochromatic Blacktron line, this iteration introduced a distinctive black, white, and neon-green color palette alongside the innovative use of modular cockpit and cargo modules that could be swapped between various sets in the series.
The design emphasizes the modularity that defined the 1990s era of LEGO Space, featuring a dual-cockpit configuration and integrated storage compartments for gear. It was conceived during a period when LEGO transitioned toward more complex, multi-functional ship designs that encouraged creative rebuilding, and it remains a touchstone for collectors who appreciate the transitional aesthetic between the classic Space themes and the more specialized factions that followed.
