Where it came from
The LEGO Road Playmat, released under set number 853840 in 2018, was designed to provide a modular, portable surface for city-themed play. Departing from the traditional rigid baseplates, this set consists of two double-sided laminated cardboard mats that can be connected to create a continuous street layout, reflecting a push toward more flexible and accessible play environments for children.
The design emphasizes a classic urban aesthetic, featuring printed intersections, crosswalks, and roadside greenery to encourage open-ended vehicle play. While received as a practical and space-saving alternative to plastic baseplates, the cardboard construction marked a shift toward temporary, lightweight accessories within the wider LEGO portfolio, catering to fans looking for an easy-to-store backdrop for their existing vehicle collections.
