Where it came from
The Robo HipHop Car was released in 2021 as part of the LEGO Vidiyo theme, an experimental product line that bridged physical building sets with an augmented reality music video platform. The set was designed to capture the aesthetic of urban music culture, utilizing specialized printed elements and translucent pieces to create a vibrant, futuristic vehicle that served as the stage for a minifigure performer. It represented a bold, tech-focused direction for the brand, attempting to integrate interactive digital play with traditional construction.
The design of the set focuses on the 'BeatBox' concept, prioritizing colorful, stylized visuals that reflect the energetic nature of hip-hop and electronic music genres. It was created by the LEGO design team to serve as a tactile companion to the Vidiyo app, which allowed users to scan their creations to generate music videos using augmented reality. While the theme was ultimately retired relatively quickly, the set remains a unique artifact of the company’s efforts to modernize the building experience through digital convergence.
