Where it came from
The Runway T-Junction and Circle Base Plates, released under the set number 5158 in the late 1970s, emerged as a specialized expansion for the Lego town and road system. These plates were designed to provide builders with more complex infrastructure options beyond the standard straight and curved road segments, allowing for the construction of intersections and circular turnarounds within a city layout.
The design of these plates reflects the functional, modular aesthetic of the late classic Lego era, utilizing a simple molded plastic geometry that prioritized playability and compatibility with existing city sets. While the set was a practical tool for collectors to extend their urban environments, it was produced as a supplementary component rather than a display model, and it is primarily remembered today for its role in enabling more diverse and intricate traffic planning in vintage Lego dioramas.
