Where it came from
The LEGO DUPLO Savanna set, released in 2016 as part of the Wild Animals sub-theme, was designed to introduce toddlers to African wildlife through chunky, safe-to-handle building elements. The set features iconic species such as a lion and a giraffe, encouraging open-ended imaginative play and early education about natural habitats. Its development reflects the broader DUPLO philosophy of combining physical motor skill development with basic narrative building.
The design team focused on simplified, recognizable animal figures and vibrant, high-contrast colors suitable for children aged two to five. By stripping away complex assembly requirements, the set emphasizes the play experience over technical construction. It was well-received by parents and educators as a tactile, durable teaching tool that fits seamlessly into the wider ecosystem of DUPLO modular sets.
