Where it came from
The LEGO 120 Small Basic Set was released in 1968, representing a period when the LEGO Group was rapidly expanding its global reach and standardizing its modular building system. This set was designed to be an entry-level introduction to the brick-based construction method, serving as a functional tool for children to develop spatial awareness through open-ended play. Its minimalist selection of pieces reflected the company's focus on the versatility of the individual brick over specialized components.
The aesthetic of this set is emblematic of late-1960s LEGO design, characterized by a primary color palette and simple, utilitarian packaging. While the set does not feature a named designer in public records, it aligns with the creative philosophy of Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, who championed the 'System of Play' to ensure that even the most modest collections could be combined seamlessly with larger sets. Upon its release, it was well-received as an essential supplemental resource for families looking to add structural building blocks to their existing play environments.
