Where it came from
The Space Fan was released in 2020 as part of the LEGO Minifigures Series 20 collection, identified by the set number 71027. This series was designed to celebrate a decade of the collectible minifigure line, offering a diverse array of characters that range from whimsical to nostalgic. The Space Fan character is a playful tribute to the AFOL (Adult Fan of LEGO) community, specifically those who hold an enduring affection for the classic LEGO Space theme that debuted in 1978.
The design of the figure is intentionally meta, featuring a young enthusiast dressed in a classic white-and-red space suit inspired by the iconic Benny character from the mid-century line. The figure comes complete with a printed tile depicting a microscale version of the classic 928 Galaxy Explorer, grounding the character in a deep appreciation for the history of the brand. It was well-received by collectors for its ability to represent the spirit of the hobby itself, serving as a charming nod to the generational transition of space exploration fandom.
