Where it came from
Released in 1997 as part of the short-lived LEGO Throwbot series, the Speedbike set 2947-1 represents an early experiment in blending traditional brick-building with character-driven action figures. The set was designed to be modular, utilizing a specialized ball-joint system that allowed for dynamic posing and a degree of mechanical movement that was quite innovative for the late nineties.
The aesthetic of the Throwbots, or Slizers as they were known in many international markets, leaned heavily into a futuristic, techno-industrial design language. By focusing on a minimalist color palette and streamlined, rugged builds, the design team sought to capture the imagination of children interested in high-speed, motorized play, setting the foundational design philosophy that would eventually evolve into the more complex Bionicle series.
