Where it came from
Released in 2013 as part of the LEGO Hero Factory line, Splitface was designed to represent a specialized villain within the overarching narrative of the Makuhero City universe. The character's design reflects the series' signature shift toward complex, buildable action figures that utilized the 'Hero Factory' building system, which focused on modular armor pieces and ball-and-socket joints to allow for high levels of articulation and customizability.
The conceptual goal for Splitface was to embody a dual-natured aesthetic, characterized by its asymmetrical armor plating and distinct color palette meant to convey a chaotic, mutated appearance. While the Hero Factory theme was a successor to the popular Bionicle line, it was received as a more streamlined and action-oriented venture. This particular set occupies a niche space in the collection, representing the tail end of the theme's prime years before the focus shifted toward larger, more integrated creature-based models.
