Where it came from
The St. Bernard Dog, identified as set 40249, was released by the LEGO Group in 2017 as part of their seasonal promotional line. These small-scale builds were designed to capture the likeness of specific animals or characters, often released in polybag packaging to serve as accessible entry points for casual collectors or as thematic gifts during holiday periods. The design emphasizes a simplified, blocky aesthetic that relies on color blocking and minimal parts to convey the distinctive markings of the St. Bernard breed.
The set was conceived as a polybag release, a format common for LEGO promotions that focuses on low part counts and high playability. By utilizing a small number of standard bricks, the design team focused on creating a recognizable silhouette, featuring the characteristically large head and gentle expression associated with the breed. Upon release, it was generally well-received by the enthusiast community as a charming, affordable addition to the growing catalog of animal-themed promotional sets.
