Where it came from
The Sunflowers M&T set, released under the LEGO Ideas banner, serves as a brick-built homage to Vincent van Gogh’s iconic 1888 still life painting. It was conceived as part of a collaboration between the LEGO Group and the National Gallery in London, intended to make classic fine art accessible through the medium of plastic building blocks. The design focuses on capturing the vibrant, textured essence of the original oil-on-canvas masterpiece while adapting the post-impressionist style to a three-dimensional, modular form.
The design was developed to balance artistic integrity with the constraints of the LEGO system, utilizing layered elements to mimic the thick impasto brushstrokes characteristic of Van Gogh's technique. Upon its release, the set was well-received by both art enthusiasts and adult collectors, who appreciated the sophisticated construction methods and the inclusion of a display-worthy frame. It stands as a notable example of the trend toward integrating cultural heritage and fine art into adult-oriented building sets.
