Where it came from
Released in 1999 under the LEGO Technic brand, the Team Challenge Set (9793-1) was developed as an educational resource to accompany the early RIS (Robotics Invention System) product line. It was designed to provide builders with a structured environment to experiment with remote control functionality, featuring a physical serial transmitter that communicated with compatible motors and sensors. The set aimed to bridge the gap between static mechanical builds and basic autonomous robotics, catering to the growing interest in STEM-based construction kits during the late nineties.
The engineering of the 9793 set focused on modularity and the practical application of infrared signaling. By utilizing the serial port of a computer for connectivity, the design represented the technological constraints and standards of the era. It was received primarily by educational institutions and hobbyists seeking to expand their Technic capabilities, serving as a foundational piece for users looking to transition into more complex programmable models within the MINDSTORMS ecosystem.
