Technic Control Centre

Released in 1991, the Technic Control Centre (9700-1) represents a significant milestone in LEGO's evolution from passive construction kits to interactive robotics. Designed as a bridge between traditional Technic building and early computer-aided automation, the set was intended to introduce young engineers to the concept of sequence-based programming. It emerged during a period of experimentation at the LEGO Group, which sought to maintain the brand's relevance against the backdrop of the emerging home computer market.

The design of the Control Centre focused on a dedicated interface box that allowed users to program movements through a basic command structure. It was conceptualized by the internal Technic development team to integrate seamlessly with standard Technic bricks, motors, and pneumatic components. Upon its release, the set was praised for its educational ambition, though it was often noted that the programming interface was rudimentary even by the standards of the early 1990s. It remains a foundational piece for collectors interested in the lineage of programmable bricks that eventually led to the Mindstorms series.
