Where it came from
The Crystal King (set 71772-1) was released in 2022 as part of the LEGO Ninjago 'Crystalized' story arc. The set represents the primary antagonist of the season, Lord Garmadon’s resurrected form, in a centaur-like mechanical construct. It was designed to anchor the late-season narrative, providing a large-scale antagonist figure that could physically interact with the ninja minifigures in a play-focused, combat-oriented environment.
The design team at the LEGO Group utilized a complex structure to replicate the four-legged centaur aesthetic, incorporating specialized crystal-themed elements to denote the character's corrupted power. Within the Ninjago fan community, the set was noted for its distinct departure from traditional mech designs, offering a unique silhouette that reflected the high-fantasy, crystalline aesthetic of the Crystalized season while emphasizing dynamic articulation for display and play.
