Where it came from
Released in 2014, The Mine (set 21118-1) emerged as part of the initial wave of the Lego Minecraft theme. Following the success of the crowd-sourced Lego Cuusoo Minecraft Micro World sets, this transition to traditional minifigure scale allowed for more complex building techniques and interactive features. It was designed to capture the iconic subterranean exploration gameplay central to the Minecraft experience, incorporating modular sections that could be reconfigured to reflect the game's randomized world generation.
The set was developed as a collaborative effort between the Lego design team and Mojang. The goal was to translate the blocky, pixelated aesthetic of the digital game into a physical medium while maintaining functional playability, such as the included TNT explosion mechanism and rotating spider spawner. Upon release, it was well-received by fans of the franchise for its generous brick count and its ability to represent the verticality and resource-gathering mechanics of the game's survival mode.
