Where it came from
Released in 1998, The Valley of the Kings was a centerpiece of the LEGO Adventurers theme. This set was designed to capture the spirit of pulp-adventure stories popular in mid-20th-century cinema, transporting builders to an Egyptian desert setting. The narrative focus centered on the fictional explorer Johnny Thunder and his attempts to recover hidden treasure while navigating traps and ancient architectural ruins.
The design team emphasized interactive play features, incorporating a hidden treasure room, a rotating statue, and a collapsing wall mechanism. The set was well-regarded for its integration of aesthetic storytelling and functional mechanics, standing out as one of the most substantial offerings in the original Adventurers line. Its modular construction and inclusion of several iconic minifigures made it a benchmark for late 1990s set design.
