Where it came from
The Thwomp Drop expansion set, released in 2020, was part of the inaugural wave of the LEGO Super Mario theme. This collection emerged from a collaborative effort between the LEGO Group and Nintendo to bridge the gap between traditional physical construction and interactive digital gameplay. Designed to integrate with the Mario starter course figure, the set recreates the iconic, gravity-defying obstacle from the Mario franchise, requiring players to navigate a sliding platform beneath a falling Thwomp.
The design team focused on replicating the tactile frustration of the in-game mechanic, utilizing a lever-based mechanism that forces the Thwomp to slam down upon impact. It was received by the community as a quintessential obstacle set, noted for its clever use of Technic elements to mimic the original game's physics. The set maintains the vibrant color palette and blocky, stylized aesthetic consistent with the broader LEGO Super Mario line, prioritizing playability and thematic accuracy over complex structural building techniques.
