Where it came from
The 9087-1 Tubes set, released in 1985 as part of the LEGO Fabuland theme, represents a distinct period of design experimentation for the company. Fabuland was created to bridge the gap between DUPLO and standard system bricks, utilizing unique, larger molded figures with anthropomorphic animal heads. This specific set was designed to introduce supplementary structural elements, specifically colorful translucent tubes and connectors, meant to encourage open-ended construction play alongside the character-driven narrative of the theme.
The aesthetic of the set reflects the whimsical, storybook-inspired visual language that defined the entire Fabuland line during the mid-1980s. While the theme was generally well-received by children for its approachable design and vibrant color palette, it eventually reached the end of its production cycle as the LEGO Group consolidated its product lines toward more standardized modular systems. Today, the set is recognized by collectors as a nostalgic example of the company's efforts to diversify play experiences through specialized, non-traditional brick components.
