Where it came from
Released in 2014 as part of the Lego Hero Factory 'Invasion from Below' series, the Tunneler Beast vs. Surge set was designed to pit a specialized robotic hero against a subterranean creature. This line marked a shift toward more complex creature builds and play-features that focused on the conflict between city-dwelling heroes and invading monsters, reflecting a mid-2010s trend in construction toys that emphasized dynamic, asymmetrical battles.
The set features Surge, a character established in the Hero Factory lore, equipped with a specialized vehicle to navigate the terrain of the underground invasion. The design reflects the aesthetic of the period, utilizing ball-joint construction common to the Hero Factory and Bionicle lines to allow for high degrees of articulation, ensuring that the Tunneler Beast and Surge could be posed in varied combat stances.
