Universal Building Set

The Universal Building Set, including set 125-2, represents a foundational chapter in the history of Danish plastic brick manufacturing during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Developed by the LEGO Group, these sets were among the company’s first steps toward transitioning from wooden toys to the interlocking plastic brick system that would eventually define the brand. The design focused on simplicity and open-ended play, aiming to provide children with a modular toolset for architectural expression rather than a specific model to follow.

The aesthetic of the early Universal Building Sets leaned heavily on the post-war industrial design principles prevalent in Denmark at the time, favoring basic geometric shapes and a limited palette of primary colors. While the locking mechanism was far less sophisticated than the modern system introduced in 1958, these sets were well-received by parents for their durability and educational potential.
