US Flag

The 50-star flag of the United States, standardized in its current form in 1960, traces its design to the specifications established by Executive Order 10834. Following the admission of Hawaii as the 50th state, the flag required a new arrangement of stars to maintain aesthetic balance while reflecting the expanded union. Robert G. Heft, a high school student at the time, is widely credited with creating the contemporary 50-star layout for a school project, which was subsequently selected by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to become the official national design.

As a symbol, the flag represents the intersection of historical continuity and national identity. Its design—thirteen horizontal stripes representing the original colonies and fifty stars representing the current states—has become a globally recognized emblem. While flags are mass-produced in numerous variations and materials for public and commercial use, the standard configuration remains a fixed cultural reference point, embodying the constitutional and political history of the United States.
