Where it came from
Released in 1999 as part of the Duplo preschool range, the 9122-1 Vehicles set was designed to introduce younger children to the basic concepts of construction and motor skills. Coming out of a period when the Lego Group was expanding its footprint in the early-learning market, the set provided simple, chunky components that allowed children to assemble their own wheeled contraptions, emphasizing tactile engagement over intricate detail.
The design follows the classic Duplo aesthetic established in the 1970s, prioritizing safety and durability with oversized bricks that are compatible with the larger-scale building system. By focusing on primary colors and modular connectivity, the creators aimed to encourage open-ended play, and the set was generally well-received by parents and educators as a foundational tool for developing spatial reasoning in toddlers.
