Where it came from
The 1005-1 Wallboard was released by LEGO in 1974 as a foundational building accessory. During this era, the company was expanding its modular building system to offer more structural stability for elaborate town layouts, and these large gray baseplates provided a flat, durable surface intended to act as the permanent floor for residential and commercial displays.
The design of the 1005-1 focused on utility and compatibility with the existing System product line. While anonymous in-house designers were responsible for the structural dimensions, the piece was received as a practical necessity for the burgeoning community of adult and child builders who sought to secure their creations in a fixed setting, effectively setting the standard for all future large-scale grid plates.
