Where it came from
The LEGO Education WeDo 9585 Resource Set was released as an expansion for the original WeDo Robotics construction set, which debuted in 2009. Developed by the LEGO Group in partnership with MIT Media Lab, the product was designed to bridge the gap between simple block-building and foundational engineering. This resource pack was intended to supplement the core educational curriculum, providing teachers and students with additional elements to build more complex mechanical structures and creative projects.
The design of the set focuses on functional utility, containing a wide variety of standard bricks, beams, gears, and specialty elements like axles and pulleys. The aesthetic follows the classic LEGO Education palette, prioritizing modularity and durability for classroom environments. It was received primarily as a pedagogical tool rather than a consumer toy, praised by educators for its ability to introduce children to basic kinematics and programmable movement within a structured, hands-on learning environment.
