Where it came from
The White Turntables (Set 402-3) were released in 1968 as part of the early LEGO system of play. At the time, the company was expanding its catalog to include more specialized mechanical elements, allowing builders to incorporate rotation into their architectural and vehicle designs. These small, functional pieces were produced during a period when the brand was refining its plastic injection molding techniques to ensure consistent, reliable connections across its growing inventory of parts.
The design of the turntables was intended to introduce simple engineering concepts to children. By providing a base and a rotating plate that could lock securely into the standard brick grid, the designers enabled the creation of steering mechanisms for cars and pivoting components for static models. The set was received as a versatile utility pack, appreciated by hobbyists for its ability to add a new dimension of movement to existing builds rather than acting as a standalone display piece.
