Where it came from
Wild Turkey traces its origins to the 1940s when Thomas McCarthy, a distillery executive, brought a cache of bourbon on a wild turkey hunting trip. His companions enjoyed the whiskey so much that they began requesting 'that wild turkey bourbon,' leading the company to adopt the name as its official brand. The spirit is produced at the Anderson County distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, a region celebrated for its limestone-filtered water and ideal aging conditions.
The brand's identity is inextricably linked to Master Distiller Jimmy Russell, who joined the distillery in 1954 and became known as the 'Buddha of Bourbon.' His approach to distillation prioritizes a high-rye mash bill and a deeper barrel char, often referred to as the 'alligator char,' which imparts the bold, spicy character that defines the Wild Turkey profile. The design of the bottle and label has evolved over the decades to maintain a rugged, traditional aesthetic that mirrors the brand's commitment to classic, non-chill filtered bourbon production.
