Where it came from
Released in 2019 as part of the LEGO Overwatch theme, the Wrecking Ball set was designed to capture the unique mechanical aesthetic of the character Hammond. This set translates the game's spherical 'mech' concept into a physical build, utilizing a transformation mechanism that allows the model to switch between its combat-ready walker configuration and a rolling ball mode. The design reflects the vibrant, stylized art direction of the Overwatch franchise, focusing on the intricate mechanical details of Hammond’s improvised weaponry and pilot cockpit.
The release was part of a collaborative licensing agreement between The LEGO Group and Blizzard Entertainment, aimed at bridging the gap between digital hero shooters and traditional construction toys. Reception among fans was generally positive, with particular praise directed at the stability of the spherical build and the attention to detail in the minifigure-scale pilot pod. While the Overwatch line was relatively short-lived, this particular set remains recognized for its successful engineering of a complex, shape-shifting vehicle.
