Where it came from
Attrition was released in 2024 as part of the Secret Lair 'Calling All Hydra Heads' drop, a specialized collection within the wider Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Originally debuting in the 2000 Urza's Destiny set, the card was reprinted here to offer players a distinct aesthetic variation. The Secret Lair series is known for collaborating with diverse artists to reimagine classic mechanical designs through unique visual lenses, catering to collectors who value artistic expression alongside gameplay utility.
The artwork for this specific printing was illustrated by the artist known as Udon, who employed a bold, stylized approach to bring the card's theme of sacrifice and attrition to life. By moving away from traditional fantasy tropes, the design creates a jarring, modern contrast that distinguishes this printing from its predecessors. Upon its release, the card was well-received by fans of the game's competitive scene and dedicated collectors who prioritize thematic visual consistency in their decks.
