Balduvian Barbarians

Balduvian Barbarians first appeared in the Ice Age expansion released by Wizards of the Coast in 1995. The card depicts the fierce warriors of the Balduvian tribes, who served as a central faction in the lore of the continent of Terisiare during the harsh climatic shift known as the Ice Age. The design aesthetic of the original iteration focused on the rugged, primitive nature of the Barbarians, reflecting their desperate struggle for survival against the encroaching glaciers and rival factions.

The Ninth Edition printing, featuring the artwork by Pete Venters, reflects the card's transition into the modern frame design used during the game's Core Set era in the mid-2000s. Ninth Edition was notable for being the first core set to feature the modern border design, which aimed to standardize the look of Magic: The Gathering cards.
