Provenance

Where it came from

Basilisk Collar was originally released in the 2010 Worldwake expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as an Equipment artifact, it was intended to provide creatures with two powerful keywords: deathtouch and lifelink. This combination proved highly influential in competitive play, as it allowed relatively weak creatures to trade favorably with much larger threats while simultaneously stabilizing a player's life total, leading to its status as a staple utility card.

For the Double Masters reprint in 2020, artist Howard Lyon provided new imagery for the card, moving away from the original mechanical aesthetic toward a more ornate, painterly depiction of the collar itself. His design emphasizes the lethal, serpentine nature of the artifact, fitting the 'rare' classification of the Double Masters set. The release was well-received by players, who valued the card's enduring utility and the refreshed aesthetic contribution to the game's expansive collection of equipment.
