Provenance

Where it came from

Carnophage was originally released in the 1998 Exodus expansion as a black creature designed to emphasize the high-risk, high-reward philosophy prevalent in late 90s Magic: The Gathering. The card was selected as a promotional item for the 2001 Friday Night Magic program, a weekly organized play initiative designed to foster local game store communities. This version features the classic Friday Night Magic foil treatment, which was intended to reward participating players with unique, visually distinct versions of staples from the game's history.

The artwork was provided by Pete Venters, a prolific illustrator who defined much of the game’s aesthetic during the late 1990s. His depiction of the Carnophage captures the visceral, decaying nature of the creature, aligning with the dark, gothic horror themes common to the black color alignment in the game. Upon its release in the FNM series, the card was well-received by competitive players who valued its efficiency and the prestige of the foil frame, solidifying its place as a recognizable piece of early tournament-driven promotional history.
