Provenance

Where it came from

The Cetavolver was released in 2001 as part of the Apocalypse expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Serving as the third and final set in the Invasion block, Apocalypse concluded a thematic narrative centered on the conflict between the plane of Dominaria and the invading forces of the Phyrexians. The card belongs to the cycle of 'Volvers,' a collection of rare creatures that players could enhance with additional color-aligned mana costs to increase their power, versatility, and strategic utility during gameplay.

The artwork for the Cetavolver was commissioned from illustrator Gary Ruddell, known for his work on numerous fantasy and science-fiction properties during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Ruddell’s design captures the creature's bioluminescent, aquatic-inspired aesthetic, fitting the blue-aligned nature of the card. Upon its debut, the Volver cycle was noted by the player community for its innovative, flexible design, though the specific high-cost nature of the Cetavolver meant it saw more frequent play in casual formats and Limited drafting environments rather than high-level competitive constructed decks.
