Where it came from
Cheerful Osteomancer // Raise Dead was released as part of the 2021 Secrets of Strixhaven drop, a limited-time product offered through the Wizards of the Coast Secret Lair series. This series was designed to showcase alternate artistic interpretations of established Magic: The Gathering cards, specifically thematic to the Strixhaven University setting, which focuses on magical academia and the color-coded colleges of the plane.
The art for this card was crafted by illustrator Nivedita Krishnappa, who utilized a distinctive, vibrant style to reimagine the traditional necromantic themes of black-mana cards. By blending the morbid concept of skeletal animation with a whimsical, academic aesthetic, the design reflects the set's goal of presenting 'academy-approved' necromancy. It was well-received by collectors for its departure from the dark, grim visuals typically associated with resurrection spells.
