Where it came from
Chub Toad was released in 1995 as part of the Ice Age expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third expansion set for the game, Ice Age was designed to be a standalone experience that introduced thematic mechanics revolving around snow-covered lands and cold-weather survival. The card reflects the set's broader effort to expand the game's mechanical depth while maintaining the dark, high-fantasy aesthetic that defined early Magic releases.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and iconic illustrators in the game's history. Rush utilized his signature illustrative style to depict the creature as a somewhat comical yet grotesque amphibian. While the card is often cited by players for its distinctive visual character and quirky mechanics, it represents the era's focus on creature variety and the intentional inclusion of niche utility cards that challenged deck-building strategies of the mid-1990s.
