Defensive Formation

Defensive Formation was originally released as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Urza's Saga in 1998. It was designed as a white enchantment, reflecting the mechanical theme of the Urza block, which emphasized complex interactions with artifacts and combat mechanics. The card was intended to provide a reactive tool for white decks, allowing players to manipulate combat damage during the declare blockers step, a strategic niche that defined much of the color's defensive identity during the late nineties.

The illustration was created by artist Christopher Rush, one of the most prolific and recognizable contributors to the game's early visual language. Rush employed his signature style to depict a literal fortification, grounding the card's abstract rules in the thematic fantasy of the Urza setting.
