Delusions of Mediocrity

Delusions of Mediocrity was first released as part of the Seventh Edition core set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Originally debuting in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, its inclusion in Seventh Edition served to keep the card available in the standard tournament environment of the time. The card was designed to function as an enchantment with a unique drawback—players would gain a significant amount of life upon casting it, but would be forced to pay a penalty when the card left play, creating a high-risk, high-reward dynamic for deck builders.

The artwork for this card was illustrated by Greg Staples, whose stylistic contribution captures the surreal and somewhat unsettling atmosphere often found in late 90s fantasy card game design. The piece depicts a distorted, illusory figure, effectively conveying the theme of a fleeting sense of superiority. Upon its release and subsequent reprints, the card was widely recognized by players for its combo potential, particularly when paired with effects that allow a player to bounce or destroy their own enchantments to avoid the life-loss penalty.
