Provenance

Where it came from

The Dingus Egg was originally released in the 1993 Alpha set as a rare artifact card, quickly becoming a staple of early Magic: The Gathering gameplay. It was designed to punish players for the common strategy of playing lands, dealing two damage to a player whenever a land was put into a graveyard. Its inclusion in the Fourth Edition, released in 1995, marked its status as a core component of the early game's identity during a period when the game was rapidly expanding its player base.

The card's iconic illustration was provided by Dan Frazier, whose distinctive style defined much of the aesthetic of Magic's early years. Frazier’s depiction of the surreal, mechanical egg provided a strange, whimsical visual that contrasted with the more traditional fantasy tropes seen elsewhere in the set. While the card is often remembered for its mechanical impact on the meta-game of the 1990s, the artwork remains a nostalgic touchstone for collectors interested in the foundational era of the game.
