Provenance

Where it came from

Dragonlord Ojutai was originally released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to represent the leader of the Jeskai-aligned dragon brood on the plane of Tarkir, emphasizing a theme of vigilance and tactical card advantage through its unique hexproof ability when untapped. It quickly became a staple in competitive control decks, where its ability to protect itself while generating resources allowed it to dominate the mid-to-late game meta during its time in Standard.

The artwork was created by Chase Stone, who rendered the Dragonlord with a focus on grace and intellectual authority rather than raw aggression. Stone opted for a sweeping, cinematic perspective that highlights the creature's flowing robes and icy aesthetic, which distinguishes the Jeskai dragons from the more predatory depictions found elsewhere in the set. The card was later included in 'The List', a curated selection of reprints integrated into set boosters, which served to reintroduce the iconic creature to a new generation of players.
