Elder Deep-Fiend

Elder Deep-Fiend was originally introduced in the 2016 Eldritch Moon expansion as part of the Magic: The Gathering card game. Set on the gothic horror-inspired plane of Innistrad, the card represents the growing influence of the eldritch entity Emrakul, whose presence begins to warp the local ecosystem. The design reflects the creature’s overwhelming, suffocating nature, utilizing the emerge mechanic to allow players to sacrifice smaller creatures to cast it at a reduced cost, simulating the way the horrors of the set consumed the world around them.

The illustration for the card was created by artist Jaime Jones, who sought to capture a sense of scale and otherworldly dread. By emphasizing the creature's immense, tentacled silhouette looming over a coastal landscape, Jones leaned into the H.P. Lovecraft-inspired aesthetic that defined the set’s narrative. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a powerful competitive tool, particularly for its ability to flash into play and tap down opposing permanents, making it a cornerstone of various control and midrange strategies during its time in the standard format.
